We are lucky folks to have the talents of  Lauren Mote and The Refinery helping out at An Evening of Food Wine & Fashion Design!

Granville’s newest hotspot, designed by Marilou and May of Vancouver based M-Studio is Vancouver’s best way to experience a new world eatery with an old world feel. The room designed with the environment in mind has used sustainable materials, LED lighting and energy efficient equipment. Committing to a sustainable work environment, a dedicated bicycle storage area and public transit subsidy are examples of how they are trying to minimize their carbon footprint.

The Refinery is a 75 seat restaurant with a focus on dynamic wines, eclectic beers and unique cocktails. With a 75-seat capacity, the Refinery will house Granville Streets only fresh, market-style-eatery. Chef Michael Carter takes pride in introducing elements of charcuterie, cheese culture, cured and fresh seafood, fresh breads, antipasti and all things market fresh to the Granville scene. With the recent addition of General Manager and award-winning mixologist Lauren Mote, the Refinery remains a step ahead of the competition through exemplary service and great value. To commit to the establishment of a sustainable environment The Refinery will maintain a majority of local high quality products wherever possible.

Lauren Mote has been an intricate part of the food and beverage industry for over 10 years. Spanning her knowledge and enthusiasm between Toronto and Vancouver, she has devoted her expertise to Le Select Bistro, Lumiere, Goldfish Pacific Kitchen, Hawksworth Catering and Chow Restaurant. With a keen willingness to explore all areas of the “edible” industry, Lauren has become an accomplished writer (particularly as the founder of Poivre Media Co.), a certified sommelier and beverage consultant, and an award-winning mixologist. Lauren’s award-winning Charred Bourbon Sour & Sake Sour prove to be the hallmarks of her delicious integration of molecular mixology, “tasting note” deconstruction, and homemade product. Currently, Lauren is at the helm of The Refinery’s wine and cocktail program on the revitalized Granville entertainment strip, in downtown Vancouver. The Refinery represents innovation in sustainability and ethical business practice, with our environment and relationships close at heart.

We can’t wait to see the martini she creates to honour David Suzuki at the fundraiser on Nov 19!

One of the great things about organizing this function is all the great people you meet along the way! I’ve been corresponding witn Sara Norman of Working Horse Winery and te things they are doing to be sustainable are unique (not to mention great!)

Working Horse Winery, Vineyard Inn and Certified Organic Farm is the only winery in Canada to use the Suffolk draft horse and we are the location where the 1st Icewine in the new world was made by present day winemaker Tilman and his Father Walter.  Tilman was also the 1st organic winemaker in Canada.
The winery consists of  a 22 acre mixed use farm with some of the oldest vinifera in BC (over 30 years),  specialize in the cultivation of rare endangered breeds (such as their chickens and horses) and feature heritage varietals of herbs and vegetables in the organic gardens as well as very rare grape varietals.   The new Vineyard Inn and meeting space offer a unique private location for get-a-way as well as environmentally oriented courses and programs.  Upcoming events include workshops by  Lindsay Coulter- David Suzuki Foundation “Queen of Green”  November 13-15 and a “Wilderness First Aid” course by Jim Ongena , one of Canada’s foremost instructors of wilderness first aid – November 27-29.
If you are looking for a great place as a touring base in the OK, check them out!  Where luxury meets the farm, you can hike out your door in summer,  x-country ski in winter, hang in a hammock or help groom a draft horse, gather fresh farm eggs, have a luxury winemakers dinner, go for an evening dip in the lake….. I might have to visit myself!

This group has been playing percussion for times ranging from several months to several decades. We hope you enjoy what you are about to hear and please feel free to dance, shout, and join us in feeling the music”.

Andrea Monteiro, Samba Dancer

Did I forget to mention the Sustainable Fashion Show by Vancouver Fashion Week designers? Or that Lindsay Coulter – the DSF’s own Queen of Green – will be joining us on stage.

It’s going to be quite the night!

We were really excited when Thai coffee cooperative Doi Chaang Coffee Company came on board as a sponsor for our event – aside from being incredibly delicious and sourced from a single village, it is an organic coffee in which the farmers own a full half of the company. Learn more at the Doi Chaang website or check out this article from the Terminal City Club Times.

How much fun is this? If I wasn’t already planning to attend the Suzuki Foundation Fundraiser at Terminal City Club for an evening of foodd, wine, and sustainable fashion design onNov 19, I’d definitely be buying tickets after this!
